What to expect

Ketchikan, Alaska isn’t called the Salmon Capital of the World for nothing! All five types of salmon (King, Silver, Pink, Chum, and the elusive Sockeye) run through Ketchikan during peak season, and you’ll have the opportunity to catch them all! Whether it is a 4-hour trip or a full-day trip, we guarantee you’re going to have a great time out on the water. Typically, you can expect to troll using down riggers and run up to 4 lines. During peak season, there’s nothing more exciting than having two or sometimes three fish on at a time. While trolling, you’ll be able to take in the sights and sounds of the Tongass National Forest, which include humpback whales bubble-feeding on the surface, porpoises and orcas playing in the water, and eagles soaring in the sky. This trip is suitable for any age and experience level.

Here, the biggest and most sought-after salmon is the king salmon. Kings are caught throughout the season, but peak season is June and July. Pinks, silvers, and chums run in July, August, and September, which seems to be more action during these months because all five species are running around this time. Sockeyes are around, but can be very difficult to hook on – if you catch one, you get bragging rights for the whole trip!

For cruise ship passengers making a short stop in Ketchikan, we offer a cruise ship special, it consists of a private 4-hour charter for salmon or any cruise ship passengers whose ship allows a longer stay in Ketchikan are welcome to book a 6-hour salmon charter. Cruise ship passengers will not have to worry about not making it back to the cruise line. We will make sure you make it back on time to depart from port. For all other visitors, you will have the option of a private 4-hour salmon charter, a private 6-hour salmon charter, a full-day halibut charter, and a full-day charter targeting salmon, halibut, and bottom fish.

Here at Stout Sportfishing, we love Big Halibuts (and we cannot lie), and want to do our best to make sure everyone can catch one too. When fishing for halibut, we’ll be between around 200-400 ft deep, using jigging lures or bait. Due to when halibut can reproduce, there are limits to the size you can take home. If a halibut is between 40”-80”, it will need to be released, but anything outside of that range can be kept. Regardless of the size, halibut tend to put up a fun fight and make for an exciting battle to get them on the boat.
